“No Worry, Come Home Now”
In the old days, there were these three-line missing persons ads in the lower section of newspapers. They’d print the name of the person in big letters, followed by phrases like "All resolved, contact us" or "Father's ill, please respond immediately." At the end of the ads, it clearly showed who the ad was from, with signatures like "Mother" or "Father (so-and-so)."
When I found myself overthinking and struggling with my work, I felt the urge to draw inspiration from the short, punchy expressions of those missing persons ads. Sure, there’s a certain sketchiness that comes with those three-line ads, but I thought maybe I could embrace that as I moved forward with my art. As for the finished piece? Well, it might be just as uncertain as whether the missing person was ever found. The headlines are strong, but still...

KinKan Gallery will host Ryoji Hirose's exhibition "No Worry, Come Home Now" from October 26 to November 17.
In May of this year, a photo book titled "Out Of Style," which can be seen as a kind of record of the antique shop of the same name run by Ryoji Hirose, was published by photographer Sumire Hashimoto. The photographs and their words act as small beacons of light, guiding us into the dimly lit interior of "Out Of Style." For those who knew the place back then, it likely evokes vivid memories of that time.
The publication of this photo book, which can be seen as a release of his origins with "Out Of Style" (perhaps the mindset that led to its publication served as the catalyst for this), seems to indicate that in recent years he has gradually freed himself from the rebellious spirit that once characterized his creative process. While the distinctive Hirose style remains strong, the sense of "release" we feel in the details of his works may stem from the gradual merging of the past and present, creating a continuous connection between them.
The title of this exhibition, "No Worry, Come Home Now," was inspired by the three-line personal ads that once appeared in newspapers. If those ads were cries directed outward, then "No Worry, Come Home Now" can be seen as a small cry from him, a way of encouraging himself, and perhaps even a cheer from us to him. I believe that he will continue to move forward with his creative work, even while muttering about the difficulties he faces.
In conjunction with the exhibition, we will also be selling related books by Ryoji Hirose, including the photo book "Out Of Style" (Author/Publisher: Sumire Hashimoto) and the catalog "As Crevice Has Grown" (Published by ARSKUMONOI). We invite you to take this opportunity to view the exhibition.
