私は2011年から怪談「耳なし芳一」をテーマに短編アニメーションの制作を始めました。
芳一、亡霊、和尚さんというキャラクターが三すくみの構造を持ったこの不思議な民話は、世の中の移り変わりとともに物語が持つ様々な側面が次々と現れては消えてゆくように感じられます。
それは、明確な教訓や答えを提示しないまま人の心の中に居座り変容し続ける生き物のようでもあると思う事があります。
2021年に本作は文化庁メディアクリエイター育成事業に採択され、現在も過程や映像を公開しながら制作を断続的に進めています。本展では”Hoichi”の現在地点を展示します。

金柑画廊は、9月13日（土）から10月５日（日）まで、土屋萌児「“Hoichi”途中経過点」を開催いたします。 土屋萌児は、ドローイングや切り絵やコラージュを用いたアニメーション作品を制作発表し、国内外で幅広く活動しています。
彼の作品は、不条理やSF、寓話的物語など、さまざまなテーマで表現されています。アニメーションならではのカメラワークによって、描き込まれたドローイングや切り絵が蠢き変容し、躍動することで生まれる独特のグルーヴ感と疾走感が鑑賞者を溺れるように作品世界へ引き摺り込んでいきます。
本展「“Hoichi”途中経過点」では、土屋が「耳なし芳一」の物語に魅せられて、ライフワークとして現在も制作を続けている短編アニメーション《Hoichi》を、現時点での作品とその背景から紹介いたします。 制作に使われた切り絵やドローイング、原画、道具、メイキング映像などを展示し、作品が形を成していく歩みと現在地点を示しながら、今後の展開や完成へと続く道を、共に歩むような展示となっております。 この機会にご高覧ください。

Since 2011, I have been creating a short animation based on the Japanese ghost story “Hoichi the Earless.” In this mysterious folktale, the characters Hoichi, the ghost, and the monk form a three-way standoff, and I feel that, as the world changes, the story reveals and conceals various facets of itself in turn. It sometimes seems like a living entity that takes up residence in the human mind, continuing to transform without offering any clear moral or answer.
In 2021, this work was selected for the Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Creator Development Project, and I continue to produce it intermittently, sharing the process and footage as I go. This exhibition presents the current stage of “Hoichi.”

Kinkan Gallery will present the exhibition Hoichi: In Progress from September 13 to October 5. Hoji Tsuchiya is an animation artist who creates works using drawing, paper cutting, and collage and is active both in Japan and internationally.
His works explore a wide range of themes, from the absurd to science fiction and fable-like stories. Using camera work unique to animation, his densely illustrated drawings and paper cuttings writhe, transform, and spring to life, creating a distinctive sense of groove and momentum that draws viewers into the work as if submerged in it.
Hoichi: In Progress introduces the current state and background of Tsuchiya’s short animation "Hoichi," a lifelong project inspired by the Japanese ghost story "Hoichi the Earless." The exhibition presents cuttings, original drawings, tools, and making-of footage used in the production, revealing the work’s process and current stage while inviting viewers to imagine its future development and eventual completion.
