“Birth”

“Birth”
Until now, I have been creating photographs based on the things happening around me.
This is a record of the things that have happened to me over the past year.
May 11, 2024.
Our child was born at 1,660 grams, a low birth weight.
To be honest, we never thought we would become parents, nor were we prepared for it.
The baby, when he was born, was small enough to fit in the palms of my hands, and it really felt like he could break if I touched him.
I was anxious both before and after the birth, but I feel like the way I see the world has shifted slightly. Perhaps I’ve started to notice the beauty in the little things more than before.
I can't capture a photograph that would make you think of the song "I Cannot Put It Into Words" by Off Course, but I want to understand what it means to have a child through my own photography.
Although my anxieties are far from over, I’m grateful for your birth and thankful to her for bringing you into this world.

Kinkan Gallery is pleased to present Tatsuya Konda’s solo exhibition “Birth,” which will run from February 15 to March 9.
Konda has created works centered on Shishashin (I-photography), exploring “the act of photographing.” His series, such as self-portraits with a sex doll, his own sexual impulses, and the documentation of his relationship with a partner in 'I want your Love,' reveal his deep engagement with Shishashin and his ongoing exploration of photographic expression.
In the exhibition "Birth," Konda reflects on his transformation into fatherhood and the changes within his family as they welcome the birth of their child. His photographs unfold themes such as shifting time and evolving relationships. This series consists of single-image works and diptychs, where the pairing of images brings out contrasts, similarities, transformations, and uncertainties. This approach reflects Konda’s ongoing endeavor to explore the possibilities within the act of “doing photography.” The boundary between the private and the public, as well as between the everyday and the extraordinary, is ambiguous. A group is a collection of individuals, and the accumulation of daily life crosses into the realm of the extraordinary. When looking at his photographs, one senses that both the present moment and our existence are uncertain and ambiguous, yet warm and endearing. It brings about a feeling of acceptance tinged with a sense of resignation. We hope you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition.
