金柑画廊では、11月22日（土）から12月14日（日）まで、
“Snail Mail: 2023–2025” Ria Bauwens を開催いたします。
本展では、ベルギー在住のアーティスト、リア・バウエンスからこの2年間に届いた約30通の手紙と作品を展示します。
あわせて、それらを収録したブックレットセットも販売予定です。ブックレットは、私から彼女への約2年間の「返答」でもあります。
バウエンスとの出会いは、2023年のインスタグラムの彼女からのDMから始まりました。その後、コラージュ作品が手紙で送られてきたことをきっかけに、この約2年間のやり取りがスタートしました。
封筒には、古い紙片やシールなど、生活の中のささやかな断片とともにコラージュ作品が同封されていました。
それらは単に作品を送るためのものではなく、封筒そのものが生活の中から生まれた小さなアートとなり、遠い国にいる彼女の日常が手のひらの上で広がるようでした。
メールアートという形式は、「送る」という行為そのものを作品の一部とし、日常に根ざした、誰もが創作しうる開かれたアートだと感じます。
いまでは手紙のやり取りは電子メールに取って代わりましたが、
通常郵便を “Snail Mail（カタツムリ・メール）” と呼ぶように、
ゆっくりと届く時間の流れもまた、バウエンスの作品の一部となっています。

Kinkan Gallery is pleased to present “Snail Mail: 2023–2025” by Ria Bauwens from November 22 to December 14.
This exhibition features about thirty pieces of mail art sent over the past two years by Belgian artist Ria Bauwens, alongside a booklet set that compiles these works.
The booklet also serves as my own “reply” to her, created after two years of receiving her mailed works.
Our connection began in 2023, when she first sent me a message on Instagram.
Soon after, a collage artwork arrived by post—an unexpected beginning to what became two years of mailed exchanges.
Each envelope she sent contained a collage piece along with small fragments of daily life—old scraps of paper, stickers, and other modest materials.
These envelopes were not merely containers for artworks; they themselves became small works of art born out of everyday life, unfolding the sense of her distant world in the palm of my hand.
Through the format of mail art, Bauwens turns the act of sending itself into part of the creative process—an open, everyday form of art rooted in connection.
Today, as handwritten letters have largely been replaced by email, the term “snail mail”—used to describe traditional postal mail—reminds us of the slow passage of time that accompanies each delivery, a pace that, too, becomes part of Bauwens’s work.
