Frips および Necessityofnonsense の名でも、遊びと精密さ、詩と不条理のあいだを往復するように、コラージュやメールアートを手がけています。
彼女の創作は断片から始まります。破られたページ、忘れられた写真、道すがら拾った一文――そうした断片が組み合わされるとき、小さな舞台が立ち上がり、思いがけない出会いが生まれます。ある作品は郵便に託されて国境を越え、親密さを運び、またある作品は展示空間の中で静かに広がり、観る人にささやかな物語を語りかけます。
バウエンスはまず Frips として国際的なメールアート・ネットワークに参加し、世界中のアーティストと作品を交換してきました。のちに、いたずら心に満ちた別名 Necessityofnonsense を名乗り、「ナンセンス（無意味）」がもつ解放の力を探求していきます。そして、論理が手を離すところにこそ新たな意味が生まれることを思い出させてくれます。
彼女のコラージュは決して厳粛ではありません。ウィンクしながら、つまずきながら、小さな驚きを見せてくれます。しかしその遊び心の奥には、イメージとイメージ、人と人、日常とアートを結びつけようとする確かな信念が息づいています。
バウエンスにとってコラージュは、単なる技法ではなく、日々の暮らしに寄り添う営みです。気づき、集め、組み合わせ、そして何よりも、分かち合うことを大切にしています。

Ria Bauwens is a Belgian artist/photographer who prefers to move lightly through the world of images and words. Under the names Frips and Necessityofnonsense, she creates collages and mail art that balance between play and precision, poetry and absurdity.

Her practice begins with fragments — a torn page, a forgotten photograph, a stray sentence picked up along the way. These fragments, once combined, become small stages where unexpected encounters take place. Some works travel by post, carrying intimacy across continents; others unfold quietly in the exhibition space, as if whispering their stories to attentive viewers.

Bauwens first entered the international mail art network as Frips, exchanging handmade works with artists worldwide. Later, under the mischievous alias Necessityofnonsense, she celebrated the liberating force of nonsense — a reminder that meaning can be found precisely where logic lets go.

Her collages are never solemn: they wink, stumble, and surprise. Yet beneath their playful surfaces lies a deep belief in connection — between images, between people, between everyday life and art.

For Bauwens, collage is not only a technique but a way of living: noticing, collecting, combining, and above all, sharing.
